In terms of parent sensitivity, compare and contrast adults that are rated as unresolved on the
Adult Attachment Interview with adults that are classified as secure. Why do unresolved
adults tend to have disorganized infants?
What will be an ideal response?
Surprisingly, unresolved and secure adults are not very different regarding parent
sensitivity towards their infants. Rather, unresolved adults occasionally display
peculiar, frightening/frightened behavior towards their infants, such as sexualized
behavior or play behaviors that are overwhelming or frightening to the child. It has
been theorized that these behaviors are disturbing or alarming to the infant and this
alarm results in a startling paradox—the infant sees the caregiver as a source of support
and alarm. It is possible that this paradox is what explains the peculiar behavior of the
disorganized infant, for example, he may start to approach the caregiver when
distressed, yet then back away.
