Explain how extemporaneous speaking is related to the other three forms of speechmaking
and how it differs from them. Discuss your feelings about extemporaneous speaking and
what you can do to ensure success.
What will be an ideal response?
Extemporaneous speaking uses the best of memorized, manuscript and impromptu
styles. It is well planned, worked, researched and practiced as with manuscript and
memorized styles, but the speaker delivers as though in everyday conversation such as
in the impromptu style. It differs from conversation and impromptu speeches,
however, because of the extensive preparation prior to delivery. It is not written or
delivered word for word. Instead, an outline of the major points is used to help the
speaker stay focused and provide accurate facts, statistics and quotes without the
necessity of reading, thereby resulting in a conversational tone, but retaining the
integrity of the information. Feelings will vary from student to student, but the key to
successful extemporaneous speeches is practice.
