What is media convergence and how does it impact the ways in which people get their news?
What will be an ideal response?
Media convergence is a term used to describe the merging of traditional and digital media. The authors argue that this practice has had consequences for both our political and social lives.
Due to media convergence, people tend to get a little news from a lot of different sources. Only 18 percent of Americans report getting their news from print newspapers, 25 percent from the radio, 33 percent from news web sites and apps, 26 percent from network news, 28 percent from cable TV, and 37 percent from local TV. Overall, however, 67 percent of adults get some news on social media from such sites Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp. The generations are clearly divided as which news source they choose. Millennials rely predominantly of Facebook whereas Baby Boomers rely more on local television and Gen Xers split the difference. The consequences mean that younger generations are far more likely to obtain their news from sources that curate themselves whereas older Americans tend to consumer whatever is delivered by the media elite.
