Explain the different creative demands from employers of show music composers compared to the greater freedom afforded to popular music composers.
What will be an ideal response?
Composers of show music normally start work after a producer or writer of a show gives them a
script of a stage show, so their music needs to fit the script. In contrast, composers of popular music are
usually free to write music about whatever they think will appeal to record producers. Composers of
show music also have duties to collaborate with others working on the show, so this is not a career for a
“loner.”
