. For Reading 13.1, from Dante’s Inferno: This canto serves as the prelude to the whole of the Divine Comedy. It introduces both Dante and his guide, Virgil. How does it also introduce Dante as the reader’s guide on the same journey that he and Virgil are about to undertake?
What will be an ideal response?
The introduction that Dante provides from this own life and journey to meet Virgil is echoed in the words of Virgil. Through this literary parallelism, the audience is made to identify with Dante’s character and to understand that they as the reader now (or at least soon will) occupy Dante’s role in the Comedy as Dante now serves as their Virgil.
