Discuss the tensions between precision and accuracy and between reliability and accuracy. What are the tradeoffs for reliability in creating an accurate measure? What are the tradeoffs for validity in creating a highly reliable measure?

What will be an ideal response?

See pages 127 for a brief description of the tradeoffs in this tension. In short, students should address how creating a particularly reliability instrument often extinguishes the richness of meaning that comes from less “precise” measures. On the other hand, creating a measure that enables greater richness will necessarily make reliability more difficult to establish.
