Students will select four of the following seven answers.
Language that allows one to obtain the things that they want or need is instrumental. Example: "Can I please have an extension on my paper?"
Regulatory language allows one to control others behavior. Example: "Please show up to class on time at 3:15pm."
Informative language functions to share information and/or facts. Example: "In order to get to the grocery store, turn left at McDowell, cross Dysart road, and turn left into the parking lot."
Language that is heuristic allows one to gain understanding or information. Example: "When would be the best time to call you?"
When individuals use language to start or define relationships they use the interactional function of language. Example: "I really care about you, I can't imagine going to this wedding with anyone else."
Personal language expresses individuality and personality and is more common in private than in public settings. Example: "You are my favorite uncle! Of course, you are my only uncle."
Creative or artistic expressions using language demonstrate the imaginative function of language. Example: "How do I love thee, let me count the ways…"
