What steps should be taken before the performance appraisal interview?
What will be an ideal response?
1, Set a time and date for the interview that allows the employee enough time to
prepare the self-appraisal.
2, Ask the employee to prepare the self-appraisal and provide an outline for doing so.
3, Don't postpone the interview or come late to it. Employees interpret these actions
as a lack of interest in them and the appraisal process. To do any good, appraisals
have to be taken seriously by managers.
4, Choose a private location where you will not be interrupted.
5, Set aside enough time (one to two hours) so that you will have time to complete
your discussion.
6, Gather all the materials and relevant information about the employee's
performance. Some managers also give copies of this information to the employee
in advance.
7, Determine which aspects of the employee's performance (e.g., strengths, areas for
improvement) should be addressed in the interview. Decide how to phrase these
points.
