The use of a chemical or physical procedure to reduce the numbers of disease-causing microorganisms on inanimate objects to an acceptable level. A chemical disinfectant is used to wipe off portions of equipment that come into contact either directly or indirectly with the patient. Disinfecting agents are used only on inanimate objects as they are too toxic for contact with living tissues.
