Arising during the same period as the Upanishads, the teachings of the Buddha reflected a similar philosophical speculation that can be found in those texts. Buddhism was developed by Shakyamuni Buddha (563–483 BCE), who as a young Indian aristocrat had a profound experience of the suffering of the world. This experience compelled him to meditate under a fig tree, where he eventually found enlightenment. He passed his philosophy on to his disciples through the Dhammapada (the path of truth), a collection of 423 aphorisms. The purpose of Buddhism was to overcome ignorance, which Buddha saw as the prime cause of suffering.
