Imagine that you are in the middle of your speech. As you look around the room, you notice
various types of nonverbal feedback that tells you what your audience is experiencing.
Describe the visual cues you might receive, how you interpret them, and what your response
might be to each.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers should include some of the following information. U.S. American nonverbal
signals that indicate confusion are furrowed eyebrows, wide eyes, and/or a cocked
head. Understanding is shown by head nodding, maintaining focused eye contact, and
a relaxed or pleasant facial expression. Disagreement or displeasure is indicated by
shaking the head from side to side, frowning and avoiding eye contact. Remainder of
