Contrast developmental leadership and heroic leadership
Heroic managers are those who have a great need for control or influence and want to run things. The characteristics of heroic managers include:
(1) The manager should know at all times what is going on in the department.
(2) The manager should have enough technical expertise to supervise subordinates.
(3) The manager should be able to solve any problem that comes up.
(4) The manager should be the primary person responsible for how the department is working.
Building heroes is the goal of developmental leaders and involves three components.
(1) Developmental leaders build shared-responsibility teams.
(2) A second component is continuous development of individual skills.
(3) These leaders develop the work group's overarching goal, which is supportive of the mission and goals of the organization.
Developmental leadership is especially effective in managing groups. Heroic leadership, if carried to extremes, can lead to excessive control and lack of development of subordinates.
