List and briefly describe the four spatial distances developed by Edward T. Hall. Include the measures of each distance and the typical communication that occurs within each

What will be an ideal response?

1. Intimate space: From 0 (or touching) to 18 inches. Reserved for very close relationships. May include kissing and caressing in romantic relationships, or consolation touches and secret exchanges with close friends. Invasions of this space are awkward and troubling.
2. Personal space: From 18 inches to 4 feet. Often called our protective bubble because it is the space that is most often invaded, which causes us to defend it. Especially important in public. "Normal" interpersonal conversations occur here.
3. Social space: From 4 to 12 feet. Communication is rarely interpersonal, especially at the far range. Often occurs in social situations, such as work and parties.
4. Public space: From 12 to 25 feet. Extremely impersonal communication, typically acceptable for large groups, such as a classroom or other audience-speaker types of environments.
