Why does direct observation typically lead to a qualitative rather than quantitative use of the data?
What will be an ideal response?
The student’s answer should include reference to the narrow nature of direct observation. The researcher can only observe a limited amount of data (what is in front of or around him or her) and therefore usually uses the data anecdotally. Therefore, direct observation tends to produce data that are qualitative rather often than quantitative.
