middle childhood period: skeletal, hormonal, strength, and stamina. What changes in height and

Skeletal – bone growth – continuation of bone ossification, epiphyses occurs (hardening at end of leg,
arm and finger bones); girls' rate is faster than the rate of boys.
Hormonal – around age 7, increases in androgens, estrogens, and testosterone which eventually result
in puberty; also importance for increase in muscle mass.
Strength – due to muscle mass increase, strength intensifies in both boys and girls; boys more so than
girls.
Stamina – increases sharply; longer bursts of activity may occur as a result; need shorter rest periods;
linked to growth of heart and lungs; stamina increases are equal until age 10; after 10, favor boys.
Height – between 6 – 12 years of age, 2 to 3 inches each year.
Weight - between 6 – 12 years of age, 6 pounds per year.
