Electrical conductance is also currently used to diagnose cavities. An electric current is passed through a tooth, and the tooth's resistance is measured. A decayed tooth has a different resistance reading than a healthy tooth. Studies differ on the accuracy of this method but tend to rate it high in detecting substantial cavities, but not early lesions.
