There is a curvilinear relationship between cohesiveness in a group and the group?s
output. This means that a moderate amount of cohesiveness is probably the optimal
amount for producing quality output. In a low cohesive group, members are not
attracted to the group or its members. Because of this, they will usually be less
motivated to work their hardest in a group. In a moderately cohesive group, members
are attracted to the group and its members, so they enjoy spending time in the group.
This will lead to more time spent on the group task. In addition, members will feel
comfortable enough to manage their conflict productively. In a highly cohesive group,
members may feel so much attraction to the group that the group itself becomes more
important than the task. Because the group has a great deal of power over members, in
some cases, members are hesitant to disagree, or the group may develop norms that
interfere with the group?s progress on the goals. To enhance group cohesiveness, the
textbook suggests the following: refer to the group as ?we? instead of ?I?; reinforce good
attendance at group meetings; establish and maintain group traditions; set clear
short-term and long-term goals; encourage everyone in the group to participate in the
group task; celebrate group successes; stress teamwork and collaboration.
