When using the ICD-9-CM, briefly describe how each of the volumes differ. Also briefly define what E-codes and V-codes are and if they are primary or secondary codes.
What will be an ideal response?
Volume 1 - tabular numerical listing of diagnoses codes
Volume 2 - alphabetic listing of diagnoses
Volume 3 - includes both tabular and alphabetic listings of procedures which are primarily used in a hospital setting
NOTE: The main point is that the student knows Volumes 1 and 2 are listed by numeric and alphabetic diagnoses, respectively, and Volume 3 is for procedures
E-code - secondary code to describe external causes of injury
V-code - secondary code to describe further information about a patient's condition
