What does it mean to use "gender-inclusive language"? Why is it important for speakers to use gender-inclusive language?

What will be an ideal response?

1. Strong answers will define gender-inclusive language as language that does not use male identifiers when speaking of a mixed-gender group or a specific profession, such as "Senator/Representative" and "police officer," instead of gender-exclusive language like "Congressmen" (TF41) or "Go see a doctor; he will help you" (MC32).
2. Strong answers will explain that sexist language is offensive to groups not represented by male identifiers and does not adequately represent the diverse communities that form contemporary society.
3. Outstanding answers will apply critical thinking skills to the student's knowledge of Chapter 10 content to explain the possible negative effects of sexist language. For example, a student might cite the added insult of sexist language to women in STEM fields, who already feel pressures of exclusion within traditionally male professions.
4. Outstanding answers will provide examples to illustrate their answer and will not rely on previous test material (Multiple-Choice or True/False questions) to provide examples for explanation.
