Why did developed countries agree as part of the Paris Accord to provide $100 billion in climate financing to developing countries?

Developing countries argued that limiting their use of fossil fuels will make it difficult for them to develop and that countries that used fossil fuels extensively in the past to become developed and wealthy should therefore provide them with assistance in exchange for forgoing fossil fuel use.
