List the eight steps in the user centered development methodology. For each step, include a sentence or two of description.

What will be an ideal response?

a. Needs analysis is a short description characterizing the interactive system (web site, video game, spreadsheet, etc.), its users and the benefits they will receive.
b. User and Task analysis characterizes the people who will use the interactive system and the types of tasks they will perform with the system.
c. Functional analysis identifies the services or functionality that the system will provide and matches services with the tasks that they will support.
d. Requirements analysis creates the formal specifications necessary for developers to implement the system.
e. Setting usability specifications determines the standards of quality for the system. These may include performance measures, which specify how quickly or accurately a user can carry out a task with the system. Preference measures measure a user’s opinion of the system.
f. Design is the organization and planning of the interactive aspects of the system. For a web site, this includes organizing content, determining visual layout and creating the navigational system.
g. Prototyping creates the first model of the system. This will form the pattern from which the interactive system is implemented.
h. Evaluation tests the system. User-based testing involves observing actual users performing representative tasks with the system. Expert-based testing is a critique by one or more usability experts. If the results of the test show that the usability specifications have been met, then the system is ready for evaluation. Otherwise, another iteration of design-prototype-test is in order.
