Briefly explain how a network interface card (NIC) works

What will be an ideal response?

Although a component rather than a device, a NIC is an extremely important part of the network. A NIC is a critical data link layer component that provides the physical address required by networked devices in order to identify and communicate with each other. Also referred to as a LAN adapter, LAN card, network adapter, or network board, these cards allow a device to connect to and access a network. No two NICs should have the same manufactured physical address. If they do, problems will result. A NIC's address identifies its manufacturer. Each NIC has a unique serial number that is assigned according to guidelines specified by the IEEE.
