What evidence has been found by empirical research to support defense mechanisms?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Empirical research has found some evidence for some of the defense mechanisms. However, they are often under different names and work in somewhat different ways than Sigmund Freud hypothesized. There is considerable evidence for reaction formation and denial, and some for projection, but little for displacement or sublimation.
