Briefly explain the difference between task, maintenance, and self?centered functions in
groups.
What will be an ideal response?
Maintenance functions are behaviors in a group that serve to influence the
interpersonal relationships of group members and also impact the overall group climate. Task
functions in groups are behaviors that serve the group charge or task. Selfcentered functions
are those that serve the unmet needs of a particular group member at the expense of the
group. In short, task functions move the group closer to achieving their goal, maintenance
functions help keep group work pleasant, and selfcentered functions derail group work.
