Stretch injuries occur when a muscle is working under eccentric loading and the load on the muscle overcomes the force of the contraction, stretching the muscle while it is contracting. A common stretch injury that occurs when punters kick a football is when the agonist (quadriceps) contracts before the antagonist (hamstrings) can relax, straining the hamstrings by stretching it while it is contracting.
