Some authoritarian regimes hold regular elections. Some of these elections are more “free” than others. In some cases, scholars even prefer to classify such regimes as “electoral” authoritarian regimes. Explain this concept.
What will be an ideal response?
Students should explain that holding elections regularly does not transform an authoritarian regime into a democracy. They should be able to make connections to the other chapters studied up to this point, drafting an answer explaining that, regular elections are only one of the many necessary attributes of a democracy.
