Answers will vary.Social attitudes toward LGBT (lesbian, gay men, bisexual, or transgender) individuals have changed greatly since the 1960s. Liberal political leaders started supporting gay rights at least two decades ago. Conservative politicians also have increasingly softened their stance on the issue. By 2011, polling organizations reported that, for the first time ever, an absolute majority of those questioned supported same-sex marriage. Today, twenty-two states have laws prohibiting discrimination in employment and housing based on sexual orientation. Eleven ban employment discrimination only for state employment. About 250 cities and counties also have anti-discrimination laws.
