Explain why privacy management might be a salient issue for blended families.
What will be an ideal response?
The stepchild–stepparent relationship can be particularly sensitive to the issue of candor and discretion. Step-relations might be hesitant to talk about any personal or private material, at least until they have established a reliable level of relationship where complete trust exists. There is a tendency for each person to feel triangulated—that is, at odds with one of the other persons in the family—whenever he or she discusses anything that might be considered private from the point of view of the other person. It can be extremely difficult for people who move between one form of family and another to negotiate what the privacy boundaries are and what information counts as secret, private, or personal. The creation of some sort of sense of special “ism” about the information that is transmitted in family communication causes these difficulties and has nothing to do with the structure/membership of the family itself.
