Our resistance to various sorts of biological attack is dependent to a great degree on our genetic variety. Take, for example, sickle cell anemia. We know the disease only from its negative effects here in the United States, but in malarial Africa, where the disease developed, being a carrier of the disease functions to ward off the effects of malaria.
