What are swap partitions and how are they used?

What will be an ideal response?

Swap partitions on an HDD contain the swap space, which the Linux kernel uses to store pages from RAM and, therefore, free up RAM. A page consists of the blocks of RAM allocated to current processes running on a computer. As swap space frees up RAM, it increases the amount of memory available for storing data and information.
