Explain what it means for phatic communication to be “content-free.” Illustrate this quality using examples.

What will be an ideal response?

Phatic communication is “content-free” because people using it and listening it are not supposed to think about its literal meaning. The phrase, “What’s up?” does not literally mean, “What is up?” (and it sounds weird to say it that way). Questions used in phatic communication also usually are not requesting in-depth responses.
