They were married early, on average at 15 years of age, to men who were on average 30 years of age, and they were not educated. Their primary function was to produce male heirs. Athenian women did, however, participate in religious rituals and public festivals, and they played a significant role in cultural life, appearing as characters in plays, figures of sculpture, and key figures in mythology.
