What is the purpose of the lateral jaw radiograph?

To examine the posterior regions of the mandible with a wider field of view than available on periapical radiographs. The lateral jaw radiograph is often used for examination of pediatric patients, patients with fractures and swelling, and patients with trismus who cannot tolerate intraoral radiographs.
