Why do infants spend so much time in REM sleep?
What will be an ideal response?
Newborns spend about half their sleep in REM sleep. In adults, we know that this is the time when they dream. Infants display a different brain wave pattern in their REM sleep so we are not sure if they are dreaming. It is believed that REM sleep stimulates brain development.
