Explain the function of rib vaulting and flying buttresses.

What will be an ideal response?

The purpose of rib vaulting and buttresses was to distribute the great weight of the cathedral outward, creating greater stability and strength, particularly for the roof. The increased stability created by rib vaults allowed for greater and greater overall height in building. The Perpendicular style in England is an excellent example.
