Discuss the pros and cons of hydraulic fracturing or "fracking." Do you support this practice? Explain your reasoning
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Possible response: Fracking is a relatively new technology used to extract previously unattainable oil and gas from underground rock formations. On the plus side, fracking has helped to increase U.S. domestic supplies of oil and natural gas, and lowering prices for consumers. It has also created many new jobs and decreased our reliance on foreign oil from volatile regions of the world; offering both economic and security benefits. On the down side, fracking has the potential to do serious long-term environmental damage, particularly to groundwater supplies. This could be like historical situations where new innovations like strip mining seemed great at the time, but later generations were stuck with negative impacts and cleanup bills. Given the many other sources of clean power being developed, I do not support fracking.
