When and how are captions used? What are the various parts, and what should they accomplish?
What will be an ideal response?
Captions, also known as cutlines, are the text that appears beneath a photograph in print and broadcast news. They are intended to add value to a photograph and help viewers appreciate what they are seeing by explaining the action and why it matters. The most effective captions consist of two sentences. The first sentence should include information that identifies the people in the shot and gives readers an idea of what they are doing without being overly obvious in the description. The second sentence is intended to explain to viewers why the image matters and to enhance the value of the shot. It may contain some context on why the people in the image are doing what they are doing, or why the subjects are being featured in a news story.
