Upon graduation, you get your dream job at a firm making $500k annually which is highly motivating and extraordinarily satisfying to you
Basing your prediction entirely on your maintaining your current salary level, what will happen to your satisfaction and motivation in 5 years' time? Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
As with any of the hygiene factors, unless it continually is improved, it will lose its motivational power and you will become dissatisfied. Even with a salary you couldn't conceive of losing its motivational power, one look at a professional athlete will tell you we don't remain satisfied regardless of how many millions we make. Herzberg categorizes salary as a hygiene factor and when held at a constant level and not continually improved will not add to our motivation but can add to our dissatisfaction. After 5 years, you may feel an inequity or injustice because you haven't been rewarded for your performance, at least not as your salary reflects. Enough will never stay enough with extrinsic motivators.
