Briefly explain what a polygraph machine measures and how the resulting information is used to determine deception. Describe challenges to the results of the polygraph

What will be an ideal response?

A polygraph machine measures signs of physiological arousal such as blood pressure/heart rate, respiration, and skin conductivity. The results are interpreted, and inferences are made about the truthfulness of a person’s responses to questions posed. A person feeling nervous or afraid of the test itself may show emotions indicating such, whereas a person telling lies may learn how to control physiological responses. In both cases, the results may be unreliable. Because of the concerns of unreliability, polygraph tests are not admissible in a court of law.
