Discuss the four major types of parenting styles.Characterize each type based on the four
factors proposed by Baumrind (1972).
These factors include warmth and nurturance, clarity
and consistency of rules, levels of expectations, and parent-child communication. Present two
traits children from each type display.
What will be an ideal response?
1. Authoritarian – low in warmth, high in rule clarity, consistency and control, high in expectations,
low in parent-child communication. Child - lower self-esteem, lower GPA, poor social skills,
aggressiveness.
2. Authoritative – high in warmth and nurture, high in clarity of rules, consistency and control without
power assertion, high in communication, and highin expectations. Child - high self esteem,
independent, compliant, altruistic, higher GPA, self-confident.
3. Permissive – high in nurturance and warmth, low in rule clarity, consistency and control, low in
expectations, and low in communication. Child - may be more aggressive, slightly lower GPA; less
independent; immature social behaviors, irresponsible.
4. Uninvolved – low in nurturance and warmth, low in clarity consistency and control, low in
expectations, low in communication. Child -poor social skills; impulsive, antisocial behaviors, lower
GPA.
