Behavioral (Modifiable) Risk Factors:
Firstly, the combined effects of poor dietary choices from processed foods and increased consumption of foods high in saturated fats and refined sugars and low in essential nutrients have aided in the extreme increase in obesity rates and are linked to chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
Secondly, a higher degree of sedentary lifestyle due in large part to the advances in technology and computers has led to a general decrease in physical activity throughout much of the world. These more sedentary behaviors have contributed to rapid increases in obesity, which is directly related to increases in cardiovascular diseases and other chronic conditions.
Thirdly, continued high rates of tobacco smoking, despite the overwhelming evidence of the harmful health effects to the smoker and individuals in close proximity, as well as to the environment, is considered to be responsible for at least 1/3 of all cancer diagnoses (American Cancer Society, 2014 ) and is considered one of the main causes of increases in stroke and chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD.
