Briefly compare and contrast the three general categories of research design

What will be an ideal response?

The three categories of research design are exploratory, descriptive, and explanatory. Exploratory research is the least structured type of research design; its purpose is to generate ideas in a new area of inquiry. Exploratory research may involve interviews or observations. Descriptive research is more structured and is used to describe marketing variables by answering who, what, when, where, and how questions. Descriptive research is often conducted through surveys. Explanatory research often follows exploratory or descriptive research in an effort to better understand the relationship between a dependent and an independent variable. This type of research is also known as causal research, and may be conducted through experiments.
