For Horace, Ode 13: Why do you suppose this poem has been described as “a defense of poetry”?

What will be an ideal response?

This ode of Horace stresses the long-lasting effects of poetry and poetry’s ability to give solace to anyone who reads it, including people in the afterlife. As the author imagines the underworld, the abode of departed souls, he sees the Greek love poet Sappho and the political poet Alcaeus both writing poetry. Their lyrics give comfort to the dead, just as Horace’s own poem has comforted him and allowed him to forget his near-death experience. No Roman poet more gracefully harmonized the Greek reverence for beauty with the Roman concern with duty and obligation.
