D
When an embolus lodges in the pulmonary vascular system, blood flow is reduced or completely absent distal to the obstruction. Consequently the alveolar ventilation beyond the obstruction is wasted, or dead space, ventilation, and no carbon dioxide–oxygen exchange occurs. The ventilation-perfusion distal to the pulmonary embolus is high and may even be infinite if there is no perfusion at all.
