The depiction of lions chasing deer, signifying heroism, has a long history in Aegean art. The smaller vessel, with five oarsmen and a helmsman, could depict a local dignitary, seated behind the helmsman, seeing off the fleet as it departs from port. The important figure seated behind the helmsman on each vessel carries a long black spear. Since the red lines above the figures in the main cabins are also spears, the passengers are warriors, either departing for or returning from battle. Each of the vessels of the fleet on this fresco is unique, differing in size, decoration (e.g., lions painted on the side), and rigging.
