Describe a therapeutic sequence for the buttocks and hips. Include soft tissue manipulation as well as joint movements
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: A massage of the hips and buttocks would include both soft tissue and joint movement techniques. Begin applying lotion and warming the area by sliding the palms from lower leg to buttocks to hip. This is followed by deep effleurage to buttocks muscles, rhythmic compression to gluteal muscles, and circular friction to gluteal muscle attachments using the knuckles. Use the elbow to apply direct pressure to deep rotator muscles. Perform effleurage along deep rotator muscles using the knuckles. Apply deep friction around the hip joint using the knuckles. Next, apply effleurage to the buttocks with a reinforced palm. Use long effleurage strokes up the entire leg and hip to reconnect the lower extremities. Drape and repeat with other leg. Next, have client change to supine position and perform joint mobilization and stretching on each leg (e.g. rocking the leg, knee to chest stretch, and stretch in horizontal flexion).
