What are the benefits and drawbacks of IPsec tunneling mode and IPsec transport mode?
What will be an ideal response?
IPsec is a protocol used to establish encryption on end-to-end communication between two devices.A common application of IPsec is to create virtual private networks (VPNs).The two primary modes of communication are transport and tunneling.
In transport mode, the length of the packet does not increase, but the header is transmitted in the clear, so it can be eavesdropped. The packet payload itself is still encrypted in transit.
In tunneling mode, the entire IP packet is encrypted from end to end, so the source and destination are protected in transit, along with the message. This mode requires an additional IP packet as a wrapper to provide normal routing of the message, which can be replaced at each hop. This mode is more resource intensive.
