Explain how marketing is both a reflection of a culture and a powerful influence upon it, giving at least two examples
What will be an ideal response?
Marketers pay close attention to what is happening culturally so that they are positioned to take advantage of changes in a society's values, beliefs, and preferences. For example, a recent cultural trend is a strong interest in organic and locally grown foods. In response to this trend, many food marketers have introduced organic products and more heavily advertised organic and natural ingredients. Marketing also influences a culture, most noticeably through advertising. People are exposed to hundreds of advertising messages each day, and the most popular messages become part of the culture. For example, the Verizon Wireless "Can you hear me now?" campaign has become part of the larger American culture, influencing the belief that people should be able to communicate with anyone, anywhere. (Examples will vary.)
