Explain the concept of nonlinear associations using an example.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Associations may be nonlinear. A classic example of a nonlinear association is the effect of arousal on test performance. When you are too aroused (anxious) you may make many errors because your arousal interferes with clear thinking. When you’re not sufficiently aroused you may make many errors because you are not motivated to excel. However, when your arousal is just right then you’ll make the fewest errors. If we were able to measure both arousal and test performance in a population of individuals, then we would expect the facts we’ve just mentioned to reveal themselves as a nonlinear association.
