Self-monitoring is a process in which a patient observes and records his or her own behavior. Patients report symptoms as they occur in "real time," such as recording the number of cigarettes smoked daily. Behavioral observation requires an observer to record targeted behavior in terms of frequency, duration, and nature of behavior. This could be used in a classroom for a child who talks out of turn. Behavioral assessments provide information directly about behavior and can be used throughout treatment to gauge its effectiveness.
